The Chinese Mythical beast called “YEAR”?!

“What Really Lies behind Chinese New Year?”

Do you wonder why Chinese people put red lanterns and red decorations (called Red Dui Lian) in front of their doors? Or the reason why they dance together to loud, noisy music? Aren’t you curious about why Chinese people wear red during Chinese new year? Well, if you are interested, then I will tell you what I discovered.

According to legends, the Chinese New Year started with the fight of the mythical beast called “Year”, which looks like an ox with a lion head and lives in the sea. “Year’s” only interest is harming people and animals and destroying properties every new year’s eve. Later on, people discovered the weakness of the mythical beast. It is said that it’s afraid of loud noises, fire and especially the color red. That’s the reason for the traditional activities in Chinese New Year and it’s all for self protection!

This is a typical list of Chinese traditions.

  • The first item is Cleaning;its purpose is to remove the old and welcome the new.
  • The next is the Decorationof the house; usually they decorate their houses with red such as red lanterns and much more. It is a belief that red decorations drive away evil.
  • Next is the New Year’s Eve Dinner. Did you know? It is considered as the most important dinner for Chinese people. It’s the time when each and every member of the family gathers in one place, which is in their parents’ home or any of the family members’ home. Most of the Chinese people want to have dinner at home instead of going out. The main dishes are fish and dumplings. They are regarded as the most important dishes, especially in northern China.
  • Next is the Fireworks Display; it’s also one of the most awaited part during Chinese New Year. It starts right after 12:00 midnight on New Years Eve to celebrate the coming of the New Year and also to drive evil spirits away. If you want good luck, be the first to light up the fireworks because it is said that the first person who lights up the fireworks will obtain good luck.
  • Then, they have “Shou Sui”, which means “after the New Year’s Eve Dinner”. Well the most common thing to do after New Years Eve Dinner is to stay up all night and light up fires and launched fireworks and it’s their way to fend off “Year”.
  • Also, adults, especially married couples, and elderly give Red Packets to young ones. It’s a belief that the money in the red packets will suppress the evil from children, to keep them healthy and give them long life.
  • Then they also have the New Year Markets. They usually sell items for the New Year like Red shirts, Red Decorations, Fireworks and much more.
  • Then last on the list is the Small Year, which is the 23rdand 24th of the last month of the year. It is said that it is the time the food god will leave the family and go to heaven to report the family activity to the emperor. The families follow some beliefs that they need to take down and burn the painting of the Food God. And after the New Years Eve they buy a new painting of the Food God and decorate it on the kitchen.
